The Congo Basin is a globally important climatic region with annual rainfall of between 1500 and 2000 mm. It is one of three hotspots of deep convection (thunderstorms<\/a>) in the tropics, the other two being over the Maritime continent and the Amazon<\/a>. These three regions together drive the climate circulation of the tropics<\/a> and beyond. The Congo Basin has the highest lightning<\/a> strike frequency of anywhere on the planet.[8]<\/a><\/sup> The high rainfall supports the second largest rainforest<\/a> on Earth, which is a globally significant carbon sink[9]<\/a><\/sup> and an important component of the global carbon cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\nWikipedia<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
